Umbria is a region of Central Italy, bordered by Tuscany to the west, the Marche to the east and Lazio to the south. This region is mostly hilly or mountainous. Its topography is dominated by the Apennines to the east, with the highest point in the region at Monte Vettore on the border of the Marche (2,476 m = 8,123 ft), and the Tiber valley basin, with the lowest point at Attigliano (96 m = 315 ft). It is the only Italian region which is both landlocked and with no common border with other countries.
The present economic structure emerged from a series of transformations, which took place mainly in the 1970s and 1980s. During this period there was rapid expansion among small and medium-sized firms and a gradual retrenchment among the large firms that had hitherto characterized the region’s industrial base. This process of structural adjustment is still going on.
Umbrian agriculture account for less of 3% of the workforce but it is a very strong component of the region economy. It is noted for its tobacco, its olive oil and its vineyards, which produce excellent wines such as Orvieto, Torgiano and Rosso di Montefalco. Another typical Umbrian product is the black truffle found in Valnerina, an area that produces 45% of this product in Italy. Also the food industry in Umbria is important, it produces processed pork-meats, confectionery, pasta and the traditional products of Valnerina in preserved form (truffles, lentils, cheese). It’s the agro industrial sector that is the stronghold of the local economy. About 1.200 aziende (firms), between them the Perugina-Nestlè in Perugia (the Bacio Perugina is a world renown specialty), and mineral waters (in Sangemini and Gualdo Tadino),
The other main industries are textiles, clothing, sportswear, iron and steel, chemicals and ornamental ceramic In the XIX and XX century in the provincia (Conty) of Terni heavy industry as the la “Acciai Speciali Terni” was the economical engine, but now its importance has declined (Almost all the artillery used by the Italian armed forces in the two world wars were manifactured there).
Textile industry is located mainly in the High Tiber Valley (Alta Valle del Tevere).
