Q&A: Where’s the best base for visiting Tuscany+Umbria? We have a week there & want to see the best areas of both?
Question by Reeny: Where’s the best base for visiting Tuscany+Umbria? We have a week there & want to see the best areas of both?
Planning my Honeymoon which will include 2 days in Venice, 2 in Florence, a week in Tuscany & Umbria and 3 days in Rome.
I would like to stay somewhere authentic/ quaint, but not too quiet (still with nice restaurants etc) in either Tuscany or Umbria which is will be easy for us to drive to towns in both places.
Thank you.

I would say Siena or San Gimignano – splitting the difference between Pisa / Lucca and Assisi. In my mind Siena competes with Venice as the most Romantic spot in Italy.

Florence is in Tuscany and is a good base for seeing the other towns and countryside. However, since you’re lookong for a good point for visiting both Tuscan and Umbrian places a couple of good choices would be Arezzo http://www.apt.arezzo.it/default.asp?var=0&lang=eng, http://www.arezzocitta.com/tourist%20information.htm or Cortona http://www.cortonaweb.net/eng/index.php, http://www.cortona.com/. Both of these are interesting places to visit in their own right and are close to the border between Umbria and Tuscany.
There are some very good restaurants in Arezzo. Buca di San Francesco is right next to the San Francesco church in the old town and is excellent. I think my favorite version of Ribollita was at the Three Saracens. Antica Osteria l’Agania is also very good. If you’ll be here in June or September, the Giostra in Arezzo is definitely worth seeing: http://www.giostradelsaracino.arezzo.it/
